Mum, you’re a wonder of the world to me!

We don’t always get the time or opportunity to tell people how we feel about them, so I’m taking this opportunity this Mother’s Day to say this:

Dear Mum

I have always suspected since you began to struggle with your health that there would come a day when all of what I wanted to say suddenly came to me, yet you were gone.  I also suspect that this is true to life, a cosmic and sorrowful though nonetheless true irony: we can’t touch what we come to find we most deeply miss... until it’s gone.

I exist because you exist.  I exist because you conceived me in your thoughts, cherishing the concept called, “your children”.  Then, having been conceived in actuality, you held me within before continuing to hold me, close to you initially, and since times, in your heart evermore.  You watched each of us develop just as you watch your entire family grow.

Thank you for continuing to hold me and us all through your prayers.

I marvel at how you cared for me all those years when I was clueless, yet as your child, along with my siblings, we get to watch out for you these days.  Your love is the example.

You held me up when I couldn’t do it myself, and that isn’t just a remark about a time before I could stand.  There have been many times when you have stood with me, and helped to hold me up, and always with such dignity.

You protected me but also held me to proper account, even though this was very hard for you and hard on you, but it was possible for you and done by you, because it was always motivated by love overall.

We reflected today how you were smiling even in the moments you felt close to dying, gasping for breath in the emergency department initial care unit, and even as we were mortally worried for you, your response was humble gratitude that we were there with you.

I’m still left with the sacred thought of what life will be like when you’ve died.  I will miss you more than I can imagine right now, and that’s how I’ll feel because it’s you.

Mum, you are like a Wonder of the World to me.  There is no ‘wonder of the world’ on the face of this earth that is more beautiful than your presence throughout my life.

But you’re still here, and you’re still able to read this, and for these significant facts, I’m so eternally pleased.

With love from all my heart, thank you for being my Mum.
